Devotional for February 6

Exercise in Peace

1 Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever. Psalm 131 (KJV)

The Morning Exhortation

Learn to roll with the punches and keep moving into the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Unhappy is the ungrateful heart that cries for more, gets it, and then only wants more still (Proverbs 30:15-16). You can be happier in the next five minutes if you will just look around and thank God for some of what He has already given you. The unhappy never learn that contentment with godliness is great gain. The fear of the Lord is so little to be found among unhappy people, so they busy themselves chasing after shiny things that only perish. Why worry and fret over lying vanities that only last a moment? Remember our eternal destination and hold firmly to the narrow way (Matthew 7:13-14).

The Prayer Appointed for This Week

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.  The Book of Common Prayer
