Devotional for November 8

Make Your Way Straight Before Me

5 Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face. Psalm 5:1-8 (KJV)

Morning Exhortation

The quality of the muscle we develop has a positive correlation with the quality of the reps we use doing our workouts. Sloppy reptations will produce inferior results. Good reps bring good stress right where each exercise intends it. In the same way, neuroscientist tell us that our thoughts are like the reps that change the brain. The mind is wired and our heart sowed with either good or bad seed depending upon the preponderance of our thoughts. A single rep may seem insignificant, but many thought reps compounded over time eventually becomes a great unmovable weight. Whether this works for us or against us depends on the quality of our thoughts. Just to sit and think of God are the best and sweetest thoughts of all. Thoughts without acknowledging God are at best like artificial sweeteners, which only reinforces double-mindedness. They provide zero calorie appeasement for the conscience. This allows one to be comfortable with wanting to go north while walking south. How can we say we believe when we seek the artificial sweetener of honor from men rather than the honor that comes from the living God? God has graciously provided all things for our enjoyment, to be received with thanksgiving and to be used with all wisdom to glorify God. To this we are called in love. Learn to walk in the Spirit. Trust in God with all your heart and stop leaning on natural things. Refuse to doubt and God will make you strong in body, soul, and spirit.

The Prayer Appointed for This Week from the Book of Common Prayer

Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that I may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
