Devotional for August 3

The Way of the Righteous

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Psalm 1 (KJV)

The Morning Exhortation

Take a few moments right now to pause and consider just some of what you’ve been taking for granted. If you rolled out of bed this morning and were able to fill your belly with food, somewhere there are people who would think that a beautiful day. When you lose sight of those who are less fortunate than you and only see those who are more fortunate, you will be one ungrateful and unhappy mess. Leave all complaining against the providence of God to the unbelievers. Count some of your blessings you have been taking for granted.  Let your heart be fill with gratitude so your mind can be filled with peace and contentment. This too is a gift of God from whom all blessings flow.

Question

How do we increase our contentment?

Answer

Ruthlessly eliminate distraction (Scripture). Let the advertisements you can’t avoid roll off you like water off the back of a duck (Scripture). Vain pursuits, vain passions, vain thoughts, look to the left, look to the right, all that is of this world is continuously streamed from giant screens on the wall to small screens held in the hand (Scripture). The volume of the messages of the world must be purposely turned down if one is to hear wisdom (Scripture). There is no contentment without godliness (Scripture), because without godliness people are ruled by the flesh, which can never have enough (Scripture).

The Prayer Appointed for This Week from the Book of Common Prayer

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Orangetheory Fitness Tryout

My original post about my first experience at Orangetheory Fitness didn’t save properly. I’ve been having a few technical glitches for the past couple of days with my blog. I should have been saving more often (moving to hit the button now). Okay, let’s do this again.

Orangetheory Fitness is a group workout built on the research that 12 minutes of work spent at the upper end of maximum heart rate (what they call the orange and red zones) will produce an increase in metabolism for a longer period of time after the workout (what they call the afterburn) that isn’t possible with a low intensity level of exercise. Add a little resistance training and boom, you have an effect full body workout that takes about an hour.

I was asked to arrive early for paperwork and orientation for my first workout. I signed the customary waivers of liability, received a tour of the place, and then offered a body scan to determine my body composition. Nothing like seeing the numbers to snap you out of complacency with being slack with your diet. Wakeup call received. Time for me to tighten up my food habits where I’ve gotten too slack. The picture below is the summary.

No time to cry about my body scan results. They strapped a heart rate monitor on my arm and it was time to go. So, each Orangetheory workout session is predetermined and led by a coach. This takes all the guesswork, planning, and preparation out of having a consistent workout routine. The day I was there the coach called it a “Run-Row” workout. There were about 16 of us present for that workout. We were divided into two groups. The first group started with the treadmill and rower, and the second group started with bodyweight and dumbbells. I was with the second group.

The bodyweight and dumbbell movements were somewhat familiar to me. Not the specific moves, but they were all variations of movements I have done lots of times in the past. I choose weights that I taught would be moderately heavy. I wanted a good workout, but still leave a little gas in the tank for whatever came next. Glad I did. I spent the entire 30 minutes of that resistance session in the gray zone. That all changed rather quickly when my group moved to the treadmill and rower circuit though.

When the coach explained the treadmill base/push and incline/speed combinations before we started the workout, it seemed simple enough. When the music started bumping and I was jogging up and down though, I couldn’t read anything on the instruction sheet. I’m going to blame that on the orange lighting, not my eyesight. Could have been a little bit of both. So, I decided to run until I got my heart rate up into the orange zone and then just try to keep it there for the predetermined 0.6-mile distance. It wasn’t the designed protocol, but it worked. Since I only recently started running again, nothing seems to increase my heart rate as fast. The coach came to check on me a couple times as everyone’s heart rate was on a big screen in the gym. I assured her I was alright, but I was really glad to get on the rower. It was only a 200 meter row and a very welcome break for me from the more intense running on the treadmill.

The Orangetheory app is a good addition. It automatically synced the workout to my phone. There are also some follow along workouts you can access for free if you want to try some of their workouts at home. Nice little app. Here’s an export from the app of my in-studio workout:

Orange Theory Workout Summary

Overall, I was impressed with the Orangetheory Fitness program, execution, and environment. I thought the loud music would bother me, it didn’t though. In fact, I rather enjoyed it. It was the kind of upbeat inspirational workout music I used to listen to when I was a gym rat about 10 years ago. It really has been a long time since I’ve been in a gym. When I moved to Thailand, I didn’t have easy access to a gym. That being the case, I got used to home workouts. Continued with the home workouts after returning to the US just out of the convenience. It was nice to spice things up with a little Orangetheory.

Devotional for August 2

In the Shadow of Your Wings Will I Take My Refuge

57 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.
3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. Psalm 57:1-5 (KJV)

The Morning Exhortation

Time is a finite resource with an unknown portion given to each of us. The opportune moment to do the right thing will always be right NOW. Take a look at the state of this world in the light of the Scriptures and it is not hard to see that we are currently living in the last days. Though it may seem to be far off, let each of us be found faithfully waiting for the return of the Lord. Remember just as the flood came in the days of Noah, so our Lord Jesus Christ has promised to come suddenly and when least expected. Closer today than it was yesterday. Let us be ready.

Question

How shall we stand before such a holy God?

Answer

Only by grace, which works by faith (Scripture). The fear of the Lord is the acknowledgement that there is only one safe way of standing before God (Scripture), and trembling is carefulness to order both the inner and outer conversations correctly (Scripture). Without fear and trembling, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Scripture). Let us watch (Scripture), work (Scripture), and enter into His courts with praise and thanksgiving (Scripture).

The Lord Will Bless His People With Peace

29 Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength.
2 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars; yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
7 The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness; the Lord shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.
10 The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.
11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29:1-11 (KJV)

The Morning Exhortation

What is sown is what will be reaped as a seed can only produce its kind. Ignorance of the type of seed sown doesn’t change this law. Such laws of nature are ordained by God. Examination of natural laws, which can be seen, are often useful to understand the unseen spiritual realities that frame the physical world. The Scientific Enlightenment of the 17th Century had nothing less than this as its chief aim until suffering the loss of God at its center in these more modern times of the last days. There is only darkness without God, but knowing about God is not enough. We must press on to actually know God through personal experience. This is the one thing needful. Pray for it, meditate on His word, seek to obey Him completely, and Christ has promised to reveal Himself to the one who waits on Him to do so. Keep sowing to the Spirit and you will surely reap the fruits of the Spirit in due season.

Question

How can we increase our inner peace?

Answer

Inner peace is like love, neither of which can be had without thinking about an object that produces these feelings (Scripture). If you want to feel love, focus on a loved one (Scripture). If you want to feel inner peace, focus on God (Scripture). Nurture the seed of inner peace with much time spent in silent prayer (Scripture), and this fruit of the Spirit will bloom even in the mists of this stormy world (Scripture).
